Derick England

I first became involved with Harrogate Hospital Radio (HHR) in 1988 following a talk given to the Friends of Harrogate Theatre of which I am their Hon. President.

Following a training period with Ian Wighton, I started presenting patient request shows mainly at weekends in September 1988.

Whilst doing the request shows I soon became aware that a high percentage of requests were for classical music. No other presenter was presenting a classical show and nobody appeared to be keen to take it on. At first I was asked to mix classical music with country music. However the two did not go well together, so I decided to include music and songs from musical shows alongside the classical and opera pieces, later adding film music into the show.

The show is called All Mixed Up and is broadcast on a Sunday evening between 7pm and 10pm in the Sunday Night Special slot. On the Sunday evenings that I am not on air, Bill Caw presents his excellent World Of Nostalgia show.

As a result of Hospital Radio I am also involved with the Harrogate Talking Newspaper in a producing, copying and distribution capacity. Surprisingly considering my Hospital Radio experience I am not involved as a reader.
